January 21 Rehearsal


Rehearsal January 21, 2013
All in all – a magnificent couple of days of rehearsals.  You have been doing this for two weeks! We are under an hour. Most people know their lines. Tech people are amazing.  Notice Cole’s sunsets and sunrises.
EVERYONE
·         SING!!!  We will only sing about two –four lines of each song. We still have a 10 min. minimum.
·         Remember cues and spots.  Also remember to think ahead to the next scene and what needs to be on stage.
·         LEVELS!
·         Avoid straight lines
·         Someone go to my box after 10AM and see if any of the movies I ordered are in.
·         Someone go to the middle school library and pick up used cards.
·         React to the weather. Cold at the beginning and cold at the end.I will have the different seasons by Thursday.
·         Gate people.  Remember your cues and come in on time.  Look stern and unmoving.
·         Know your cue in the races line.  Italians, Poles, etc.
·         Laugh at Savannah.
·         All fight scenes – we need people noises.
·         Ask Madi about end ringing
·         WORK ON LINES
·         Work on train scene and Nate & Billy climbing wall.
·         Be more excited about the UNION.
·         LOUDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  EVERYONE
·         When Hilton says they can have the union, everyone act differently and in different ways.
·         When you enter the stage (except for Billy), you see friends, you react.  Laugh at Savannah’s line about more babies.

Perfection –diction
You are showing off your friend, so make your first line in the welfare scene a welcome.
Be louder – good accent.
Push Alice once.
Work on being mad, especially when Rose spits.
Graham
The wop line needs to be angrier and let Savannah calm you down.
Vinny – say Vinny like you can’t believe it. A question?  Picture Ron Burgundy.

Walk in character.  We will have to change your look before the scene after the welfare scene.

Stand and sit up straight or everyone will be wearing corsets.

In steel mill, be as loud as Hayden.

More emotion and feeling toward each other.
Speaking of foreclosure – must have more emotion.

Rose
Your son is lying at home with three broken ribs!  He called somebody’s father a scab, and six kids jumped him.  The police brought him home.
Nate
He knows how to take care of himself.
Rose
That’s all you think about, isn’t it?  Drinkin’ and fightin’ and bein’ with your buddies.  Bobby is thirteen years old.  He needs a father & he gets you tellin him to fight his way through everything!
Jared
Getting up from fight scene – show more pain.
Nathan
Train light further upstage.
Hayden
Jump the fence first because you have a line later about seeing the train. Then climb back over the LADDER.
No parenthesis
Think about picking up the bag, and it reminds you of the Glory Days.  Dust it off and people come in.
Be ashamed that your papa left.

  1. Everyone needs to be commited to their parts. Acting is a form of art. Like in painting if you start with a dirty canvas your painting will most likely be ruined. So we need to start our show off on a clean canvas. The first things the judges will here is Billy's accent. If they don't understand him in the beggining then they may not understand the rest of the play. Last year one of the judges said that he had to adjust to the Brooklyn accent. We should expect that to happen again this year with all the different accents in our play.

  2. Kayla I understand where you'er coming from about Hayden's accent but we all have to understand that an irish accent is one of the hardest accents to learn. He's doing very well for only having it for like three weeks. But you're right about all the accents as a whole.

    Lighting needs to be smoother and sound needs to be a little bit louder. Stay in character more! Stay on cue and remember when and where to come in at.

  3. Freezes need to be sharper, and coming out of them needs to be smoother. The beginning of the welfare scene needs to transition better into the lines. Do NOT forget to get a number and pencil from page, and give it back to her. Also take your chairs out of the scene. Do not forger.

  4. The most vital element we have to have done soon, before our first clinic is order. We have to figure out who is in what scene and what order they go in, I think that we are doing good on memorization so we just need to find order and smooth the transitions.

  5. Another line I believe we should reinclude is the line that reveals that Billy's mother died, because it is another heart-wrenching moment of the play. Also, if she died around the strike it could help explain that Billy was so impatient and prone to violence because he was truly hurt from his only family member dying. It would also help the line when Billy is yelling at Reg, accusing him of hurting all of the strikers, because Billy might resent Reg a little for convincing him to go on strike which maybe have kept him from spending time with his mother during her last few minutes on earth or maybe because he went on strike he did not have enough money to pay for his mother's medical bills. Or perhaps just the opposite- that Billy blames Stelco for him not being there with his mother when she passed on because of the hours they made him work and that he feels Stelco is responsible for his mother's death because they did not offer a high enough wage to support his mother and her medical bills, so he was really eager to get back at them by going on strike and trying to injure their employees.

  6. I think our singing needs to very predominate in the play and the way we all express how we feel. I think this will be a great advantage to us, because this will be an element that that other shows don't have and will show how we can also sing (maybe not all perfectly) as well as act, and how we can add an element such as singing but not overwhelming a 40 min play.

  7. A very important factor that we haven't discussed is communism. Communism may sound like its the fairest form of gov't but it isn't the politicians have all the power while individuals have little to no power in gov't so they in fact are actually fighting against the union by being communist

  8. I believe that each one of us need to understand the play as a whole and the others in the play. We need to grasp the concept that none of us are doing very well during this time. Show it. Always be aprat of something in the play. Really grasp that most of us are barly getting by each week in this time period. When there is good things happening be bold and show it, maybe its a turning point, the aduidence needs to see this.

  9. We have to work on our emotions about what is happening in the play, and also show how we age through the years that the play is taking place. When I searched for characteristics of Scottish people, I found that they are known for humor, and sarcasm. They also are very dedicated hard workers, determined to get the job done. So I will work on pursuing those things.
