"As the depression carried on 1 in 5 Canadians became dependent on government relief. 30% of the Labour Force was unemployed, where as the unemployment rate had previously never dropped below 12%." The depression had a different toll in Canada then it did in America. Canada was a farm industry and when the depression happened they had no food, no work. No anything. "The number of Immigrants into Canada dropped from 169 000 in 1929 to fewer than 12 000 in 1935 and for the rest of the thirties it did not rise above 17 000. Almost 30,000 immigrants were forced to go back to their home country due to illness and unemployment. The number of deportations also rose from fewer then 2000 in 1929 to more than 7600 within three years." As you can see immigrants such as the ones in our play had a tough time. But the o ne thing they did do is stay strong. I guess the kind of theme for the depression is staying strong. We have to represent this in anyway possible.
ReplyDeleteThe union wasn't the first strike in Stelco history. (according to wikipedia)"Several union drives at the plant were unsuccessful, until the founding strike of Local 1005 of the United Steelworkers of America in 1946."
ReplyDeleteI think it is very important that each charcter is the person they claim to be. We have many differnt culturs in the play, from italian, polish, and more. They need to show that is who they are. Act like you came from these places. Have gestures, movements like they would. Like for instants graham needs to have more hand motions, be touch like a italin would. This goes for everyone learn what the people are like from where you come from.
